Sometimes it can be useful to have a password protected region on a site which is accessible only by specific groups or individuals.
For instance, it may be helpful to have a section that is soley for staff use where information that's of no relevance to casual visitors - such as timetables, notes from meetings, internal memos etc - can be posted.

A forum can be an affective way of encouraging people to return to your site on a regular basis.
